Check Engine Lt/Sensors

I just need some clarification here. Recent reading I've done indicates that the primary offenders here are the venerable 02 sensor (suggested replacement timeframe of 75,000 miles?) and the MAF sensor. The O2 sensor in question is the pre catalytic converter installation. The info I've read on the MAF sensor indicates that one can remove it and, using some electrical/electronic parts cleaner, can perform a maintenance cleaning upon the thermistor (?) wires inside it. Last question concerns resetting the on board computer by simply removing the fuse to same for a recommended period of approximately 10-15 seconds to clear any stored codes.
How true/accurate /recommended are any of these procedures? I got the info off of a similarly well put together forum and sounds fairly accurate but I'd like some clarification of it if anyone is willing to help here. I don't need to screw up my truck without a really good reason for it..... Same site also recommended NON platinum spark plugs - valid suggestion here or someones' overestimated personal opinion?

Thanks in advance for the .02 here folks.

Re: Check Engine Lt/Sensors

You can clean it but be careful, you can damage it.
I usually wait longer than 15 sec.
Use whatever plug the owners manual says to, more expensive doesn't always mean it will work better. Some engines are pickier than others and won't tolerate different plugs.

Best I can do without knowing what year and engine you have.

Re: Check Engine Lt/Sensors

Sorry about the info slip Fourwhl. The vehicle in question is a baseline 98 with the 2.7 liter 4 banger and an automatic tranny. No SR5 or anything else - just a plain 4runner. I'm also toying with the idea of that header that the LCS folks have on the market - the truck has 102,000 miles on it so I don't think break in is an issue
