87 civic vac. ing?

ok iv got an 87 civic si i know its a vaccume advanced ing. but how does it work? does it all come from that black box that says tek on it with all the vac. lines going to it? i noticed that my coil wire hooks up on the same side as the box and that my dist. is located on the left side of the motor the box is located on the right front side of the engin bay
