98 windstar can't communicate with computer

Changed out the coil today, started the van up before I bolted the coil back. it ran fine, so I shut it off and bolted the coil on. I put everything back together, went to start it up and nothing. I grab the code reader and it fails to connect with the pcm. I took everything back apart and found that the wire(that is held on by one of the bolts for the coil) was pinched. I fixed that wire and still get nothing. I can't hear the fuel pump running, it cranks fine but just won't start. I am baffled. I checked all the fuses and relays and they are all fine. What else could cause no comminication between code reader and pcm???

Re: 98 windstar can't communicate with computer

It is possible that you blew a fuse.
Looking at the wiring diagram for my '96, which should be close to what your '98 has.

In the engine compartment, the PCM power relay pulls power through Fuse "S" in the engine compartment power distribution box.....It is a 30 amp fuse.

The PCM gets power all the time from fuse "R" in the power distribution box, it is 15 amp.

The PCM relay coil is protected by Fuse 20 in the fuse panel above the driver's left foot.
It is 25 amp.

Data Link Connector.
Power is on Pin 16 Grey with Red stripe wire
Ground is on Pin 5 Black with White stripe wire
Data + is on Pin 2 Tan with Orange stripe wire
Data - is on Pin 10 Pink with Light Blue stripe wire

Thanks. I did check all of the fuses before, but I will go check them again now.

It was the #20 fuse. Lesson learned: Never trust a fuse tester!

Thank you, wiswind!
