A/C compressor shutsdown after 10 mins

2000 Silverado 5.7L A/C works on initial drive for about 10 mins and compressor stops cycling. I checked low and high pressure cut of switches bypassing and compressor would not engadge. Also have now power to either switch. If i park the vehicle for several hours the compressor will work again for about 10 mins.

Charge is good after checking further i found power to compressor clutch but clutch does not engauge after compressor warms up the clutch disengages and won't reengage until it cools down.

Can the coil be replaced with replacing the entire compressor?

with special tools,,,yes...where you live a/c is big ...make calls for price on replacement ..it will be cheaper, and in most cases the system will not require the recharging..

A new compressor can cost 500. then the setup costs

Re: A/C compressor shutsdown after 10 mins

Seen it several times before- always on higher mileage vehicle--

Next time it is off and should be on-- bump the front of the compressor with a blunt object- like a hammer handle-- the compressor will engage...

If low mounted compressor- Then take clutch driver off the front of compressor and remove a shim...

If high mounted compressor- adjust the air gap with borrowed tools from autozone

In either case the air gap is too wide- when coil heats up, it can no longer provide enough magnetic field to pull in the clutch over that too wide (due to wear) air gap. When cool it has the magnetic strength. Easy fix- takes ten minutes-- or you can spend the big bucks for the new pump-- both will get you what you want.

Oh, if you choose the new pump method-I'll fix your old one and use it somewhere......
