1998 Cavalier Z24 2.4 Quad 4 Head Swap / Interchange help.

1998 Cavalier Z24
2.4 Quad 4
Automatic
122K

I'm back... It looks like I need a new cylinder head for this thing! I need to know what years I can get one from.

I can get one cheap off a 2001 Grand Am but from what I find they are only swapable from 1996 to 1998 for my engine. The guy at the junk yard says it will work. Anyone know?

Here are my VIN and head numbers/markings:
VIN: 1G1JF12T1W7XXXXXX
BIG NUMBERS ON HEAD: 24574683
SMALL NUMBERS: 23126 & 691

The head I am looking at from the 2001 Grand Am is marked with:
24575779

I hope someone can give me definative answer or point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance...

I think you're right about 96-98, I think I remember seeing that year range when I bought a head gasket set for my '98 Grans Am.

And you might want to change the last 6 digits of your VIN to "XXXXXX", in most cases you can have a key made from the VIN#, and passlock is so easy to get around. The last 6 are just the production number, the only need for them is to get the build date when ordering parts from a dealer.

Re: 1998 Cavalier Z24 2.4 Quad 4 Head Swap / Interchange help.

i know this may be a little late....but you cannot get a key cut off the last 6 of the vin.it has to be the whole thing.now....the whole vin can be found if put into the right program.i am being kinda vauge on what program(s),so people don't try to get key codes.in order to get a key code or a cut key from a dealer, you HAVE to show proof of ownership of the vehicle with at least your photo i.d. and either a title, registration or current ins. card.all info has to match.

the last 6 of the vin is the production number as you said....but,they are not only 'needed" for a production date. if you bring just the last 6 into a dealer he may not be able to look parts up for you.it's best to bring the entire vin(mininum of the last 8 digits) with you to be on the safe side.
