Hello, I have a 1996 Geo Metro LSi 4 door 5 speed 1.3L and I have a few questions...
My Geo will shift from first to second, but when shifted into second gear, it grinds and then spits it back out. I haven't gotten a diagnostic on it yet, because I wasn't sure. I called the transmission people and they said it might be a bad second gear. Any suggestions for me to try before I bring it in? I've been driving it, just shifting from 1st to 3rd, and it works just fine, but for whatever reason, 2nd will absolutely not work. Help? Thanks! ~ Mike |

Re: 96 Geo Metro LSi gear problems
Hi Mike,
First thing to do is to check that your motor mounts and bushings associated with the shift linkage are in good shape. I've been inside a couple 5 speeds, although, I don't remember a whole lot. If you're popping out of gear, then at the very least you will need to replace a synchro, and worse case scenario you're looking at a synchro, shift collar and second gear, assuming all is well with the shift fork and associated linkage. Hard parts for these transmissions are expensive. What I would do, if I were you, is try to find a junk yard/salvage transmission. I've had good results with them. And replacing the transmission yourself will save you a lot of money vs paying someone to remove, open up, repair, seal up and reinstall yours. My prediction is that you'd get worked on parts alone. -Matt Quote:
