98 Malibu Really excessive idle + more

I did see the earlier thread with the newer malibu, but it doesn`t seem to be the same symptoms.
I replaced the injector o-rings, and realized I needed to replace the o-ring from the fuel line to the fuel rail (could only find one close) and it seems to have fixed the leak. time for a new worse problem..
It ran perfect for about 15 minutes, I stopped for a few minutes, topped the coolant, by the time i stopped at a light, i realized it stalled.. started it, roughly started, then stalled again. I only got it moving by putting in neutral, holding the gas at idle speed and putting in drive..
The whole way home the rpm`s fluctuated and if i took my foot off the throttle the rpms would drop like the car wanted to stall while it was moving. got it home to park it and the rpms started to kick higher(around 2000) once i slowed down. (to the point i had to ride the brakes the whole way down the alley). and as soon as I hit neutral from drive the rpms started to run around the 3500-4000 mark. Also the braking felt hard for the most part (almost like they had now power or were failing), but intermittantly.
I checked for loose hoses, bolts wiring clips.. couldn`t find anything. And now anytime I start it the engine just revs right up.
The only possible thing if it could be relevant is a plastic vacuum(?) hose that goes from the front of the engine, to the throttle body, to the back of the engine looked a little worn at the connection to the throttle body.
Thanks In advance for anything you think might help

Re: 98 Malibu Really excessive idle + more

You may not have noticed my reply to th 7/23/09 "2003 Malibu High Idle" thread. Here it is again, sounds like you have a similar problem.

My 99 Malibu, 3.1L with 110,000 km did the same thing. As well, the engine light stays on (Code 0442). Two weeks ago I replaced the AIC and cleaned the throttle plate but no improvement. After this, I pulled the codes P0122 and 0113. I then replaced the TPS (throttle position sensor) and IAT (intake air temp sensor). The high idle has not come back. I will wait one more week to satisfy myself that the problem is resolved. PS: I always have the heater control set to defrost/floor. I know this causes the A/C compressor to engage and at first thought this might contribute to the problem, but now I don't think so. PPS: The engine light is still on, even after repeatedly clearing the code and installing new GM gas cap. That's my next challenge. Car runs great, even with the standard equipment tick-tick-tick of piston slap.

Re: 98 Malibu Really excessive idle + more

Thank you. And I did notice your previous post, I just thought the symptoms were a bit different. But think I will give it a try.
Also an update. Left the negative off the battery all night and now its having trouble starting.. I can get it going, but I need to give it gas to keep it from stalling.. I haven't had it run very long just yet, too worried about the idle blowing the engine i guess
I have a hayne's manual. It seems In the troubleshooting steps the only thing that can match up with all the troubleshooting descriptions is the idle air control system. And I did clean the throttle body out with brake-cleen, so it is very possible some got in the IAC.
