Re: engine swap
I don't know how much fabrication you're interested in, but again, anything can be done it's just a question of money, time and effort. I can't help you directly with your questions, but:
Every discussion I've seen here has ended up with "it's better/easier/cheaper to buy the vehicle with the engine you want". However that said....here's just a few alternate ideas... In the "more power" department, some guys have put the throttle body from a 4.0 on their 2.5 to make a lot more power. Since the 85 is carbureted, you'd probably need a spacer, intake and exhaust...which should liven it up. If the grunt you need is off road, you could check out these guys: http://www.klunev.com/ for another gear reduction. If you're set on a swap, consider: http://www.golenengineservice.com/html/jeep.html It's a 4.0 and swapping in might be easier than switching the AMC V8; although I don't know if they have a carbureted version. Sounds like an interesting project any way you slice it...there will likely be some more commentary shortly. Let us know how it comes out!
