could a altenator that is not charging right make the car stop running because the qdm is ready a low voltage problem and shutting down the car?? the altenator is only showing that it is putting out 6 volts and i thought it was suppose to be around 13 volts

You apparently have a bad alternator and yes, low voltage can cause the engine to shut down! What is the battery voltage with the engine off?
