Oil light comes on when i first start

I have a 95 grand am gt 2.3 dohc. I have both an oil light and a pressure gauge. for the last couple weeks when i first start up the oil light comes on and stays on. if i turn off the car and staert it again it goes off. my oil pressure is at about 60, according to the dash, and runs at 20 at idle when warm.

i changed the oil pressure sending unit abount 2 months ago, broke the old one when tightening it.

any help would is appreciated

Re: Oil light comes on when i first start

Sure it was the correct oil pressure sending unit ?

Though I think the oil light means low level.

I am reasonably confidant it is the correct one. i have also checked the oil level and it is full.
is there a sensor that detects the oil level?

Re: Oil light comes on when i first start

this is the oil pressure specs. for your engine compare it to this and post back at 2000 rpm it should be 30 psi minimum, at 900 rpm it should be 15 psi minimum.

It is possible that the oil you used is to thin (wrong viscosity, or the oil is old, or engine has a lot of miles and has internal problems (example: worn crankshaft and camshaft bearings, oil pump screen dirty etc)

try using 10W40

Also, I think the oil light comes on initially on start up(as a bulb test) for 3-5 secs. but then suts off unless theirs a problem.

Re: Oil light comes on when i first start

I haven't put a physical gauge on it but in answer to the previous post the pressure, after its warmed up is at 2000 rpms the pressure is about 35 and at idle 1000 rpms about 25.
it doesnt knock or make any noise.
i am thinking about running a cleaner through it, any thoughts on that?

then it is good. As Xi said it could be only bulb test. Do other lights go off at the same time?
