Yes definitely check the waterpump mine broke at 60k miles it is plastic... I actually got a metal one put in but just to be safe check this pipe called the coolant flange just recently i had that issue where my car was runnng hot amd that was the issue before u pay someone buy the jetta book im a girl and i put that on myself... You really get ur money worth from buying the book its like 19.99 at ato zone or oreilys but it really help me sae a lot of $$$ my fan went out one time the dealer wanted to charge 1000 just to put the fan on.... I felt so stupid when i got the book it was 3 screws and plug to put it on!!!

Re: 01 jetta 1.8t overheating
^^^ 1000? Are you sure it was just the fan. Other wise that is a complete rip. None of the fans even exceed $300 and they certainly are not going to charge you 7 hours of labor. I would expect 1 hour max diag.
But as stated, the water pump is an internal pump. It has a plastic propeller that typically breaks. If you've had your timing belt done, the water pump should have been replaced as well.
