Tamiya SARD Supra Question

I just wanted to know how much space the "engine compartment", if you can call it that on the sard supra, has.. i was thinking about building one, but not if there is not way of fitting an engine in there.

so how much work would it take to clear out some space under the bonnet once its opened up?

ah, i do however have a question though... would anyone know if the interior tubs from the Sard supra and the regular non-race version tamiya supra be interchanged easily?

reason im asking is b/c i want to build a street version out of the sard supra, and a drag/race version out of the factory supra...and if the tubs can be changed out easily, it will be perfect since the sard is already stripped and caged with a racing dash board

More than likely they are compatable. Tamiya is certainly into modular kit design, so they have to make as few changes as possible to make a new kit. If they can reuse parts, they certainly will.

But here's a good way to verify it. Hobbysearch posts pics of kit contents and instructions on their site. Take a look a the contents of the two kits. If you can convince yourself that they share the same base chassis (or even chassis parts sprue), then the cockpit tubs are essentially interchangeable. See if the parts numbers match, or see if the chassis parts looks the same.

hey man thanks for that website. there was no SARD supra content, but the castrol supra seems to be pretty much the exact model w/ differnt decals.

interesting enough there is no "tub" that goes into the castrol supra, but its rather built up from the chasis by putting in the seats, rollcage, dash, etc.

but it does seem like i will be able to simply use the Sard supra chasis peice with the factory supra body, and use the Sard widerbody with the stock tamiya supra chasis.

i gues when i get the models i'll see which route is the easiest to take.

I do not think it is a straight drop in, but not impossible with some work! I am sure I have seen it done before.

Yeah, on looking at them they do look like different chassis parts.





I think the Castrol/SARD car doesn't really have a 'tub' for the cockpit- the chassis forms the floor of the cockpit, whereas the street version does have a tub for the floor and door interiors.

But I expect with a bit of effort, it certainly could be made to work. I would be tempted to see if the body shells could be swapped easily....

Here are my old Supra builds for comparison. Don't mind the dust and quality because they were built several years ago and I have gotten better since. I should mention both are wonderful kits but, I did have a difficult time with the decals on the Sard Car because they are so big.

hey man thanks for those pics BIG time. i have a much better sense of what im going to be working with.. the shells both look to be about the same length in the pics, is that correct?

if you could do me a HUGE favor, could you try to fit either of the shells over the other chassis and see if atleast the wheel arches line up? if so it should be a fairly simple swap to get the chassis from shell to shell.

as far as decals im not consered b/c it will be painted a solid color as it will be a "street" version of the car, i just needed a wide body

and b/c the sard supra doesnt have a tub, what i plan on doing (and HOPEFULLY it can be done) is using the chasis and tub to build the sard street version, and then use the race interior to build up either a time-attack supra, or a drag supra if i can find a pair of slicks for the rears. reason is that a tub should be pretty easy to put in as ive seen it done with a sard supra, and i know i can easily install the seat and rollcage into the factory supra chassis.

right now the only thing concerning me is that the wheel arches line up over the different shell/chasis and the fact that the sard supra doesnt have any engine bay panels as the bonnet will come off and be installed on the drag or time attack supra...

actually now that im looking at the pics again it seems like the wheel arches are in identical places, just the placement made the sard look alot longer then the stock. the only thing that apears that would be in need of modification is the front peice of either bodys or chassis b/c the clip-in points are at different heights, but since the sard would be sporting a nice big frotn mount intercooler i dont think it would be too much trouble to move those two little pins downward.

Used chassis and interior of Castrol, with a cut off engine bay from the road car in a modified road body.

Lots of pics don't exist anymore, but there are enough to get an idea. Hope it helps

thats a cool build man. you said you cut off the bay from the street version and put it in the race version chasis, i see that, so im guesing the rear of the sard fits right in the street version body? or atleast with little modification.

i wanted to use the sard bottom for the race car i want to build.. but i gues i'll see what will happen once i get both of the models, thanks for the pics man
