2000 Grand am cranks but won't start
Pulled my sons 2000 Grand am 2.4L Auto from the shop from hell. He took it their because it started idling funny and then lost power and died. When he tried to start it he heard a mechanical noise during cranking. He changed coils and coil cover, spark plugs and boots. Mechanic changed starter eventually and checked many other things, still no start! I trailered car home and noticed the PCM on floor. reinstalled and car cranks but won't start except with starting fluid it almost starts ( security light on). Found wire off of ignition switch and broken shift lock cable. Reinstalled wire and security light is off. Still cranks but won't start,Compression is 180 psi in all cyls, checked spark and it is blue, noid light pulses at injector, timing marks are all lined up correctly and there seems to be fuel pressure when you remove the pressure regulator (however I dont know the pressure or the specification). I rechecked the plugs and they looked fouled with gas so I put new ones in again. I was going to change ECM but ECM manufacturer said sounded like timing chain so I checked that instead. I smell gas from tailpipe when I'm cranking the engine.
Any Ideas out there???? Last edited by stkpiler; 08-04-2009 at 08:11 PM. |

Re: 2000 Grand am cranks but won't start
Welcome to AF !!
Fuel pressure with key "ON" should be 41-47 psi , 52-66 psi without and EGR. It's possible the injectors are firing just not good enough. I'd test the injectors resistance to see if they are working within tolerance. Fuel injector resistance is 1.95- 2.3 ohms , without EGR 11.4- 12.6 ohms. Other then that I'd also dry out the cylinders.
