02 cavalier a/c makes engine rev/no cold air

I hope I am in the right spot, since this is my first time posting. OK, my a/c is having major issues. Whenever I turn my a/c on, my cars engine starts to rev and my RPMs jump way up, then down, then up (about every 5 seconds)... this continues the entire time I have my a/c on. It used to only happen when I was sitting idle at a light or something, but now I can feel it and hear the "clicking" happen as I drive. If I stop at light, I have to make sure to keep my foot hard on the break or I lurch forward. Now not only am I having the reving problem, but the only time my air is even close to cool ( yes my air is not cold at all) is while my engine is reving. As soon as it is done reving, my air goes back to semi warm. We did check the levels of Freon ( sorry about spelling) and they were very normal. What else could this be ??? I have a road trip coming up soon, and right now I don't dare take my car...

Spelling was right, but Freon hasn't been used in the US since 1995. It was the trade name Dupont used for it's R-12. We now use R-134a. How much refrigerant was in it? The PCM increases the idle speed when the A/C is turned on to make up for the extra load placed on the engine. If the system's low, then the PCM will speed the engine up too much since there is much less load on the engine. Start by taking it to a shop to have the system evacuated, dyed, and recharged. That should take care of the A/C problem and show you where the leak is. I'd bet it will take care of the "reving" as well.
