black plastic surrounding rear window fadding fast

I have a 97 explorer that is still running well despite 220K miles.

My biggest complaint is that the black plastic that surrounds the rear window looks faded / corroded. Parts of it are okay, but other parts look like crap. I see other explorers from around the same time period and most of them don't seem to have the issue. What is the deal? What can I paint it with? Probably not a normal paint...

I have a 91 and i had the same problem. I taped mine off and primed them and then used a flat black. I used cheap spray can and it worked just fine. Just don't do thick coats it will run easily.
