P/e ?

Quick question for you model heads I have sms focus p/e set.
I want to use the dash and add buttons and such. How do I
drill through the p/e? My pin vise will just scratch it up. My
dremel is too fast even at lowest setting.
Help.... Im curious to hear what you guys do

I'd just drill into the existing dash and add the buttons that way.

Daniel

PS--Did you get my PM from the other day?

Re: P/e ?

If you need to drill through the PE part, put a piece of Tamiya Masking Tape over it, and mark the spots where you need the holes. Drill the holes placing the PE in a cutting mat, using a hand vise with a fine drill.

The tape will protect the part and help the drill to stay in place while you do the holes.

Works for me!

Re: P/e ?

I forgot the specific name of the tool, its i think a set? Looks like the thing that breaks your car windows when trapped in water or when your stealing systems.

Sorry that was off topic, but what you can try is use a really small nail and bang it with a hammer or something, not too hard. Lighty first then see if mark was made, if not bang a little harder. Once you have a indent from the nail proceed to use your drill vise, won't slip now. Just a thought.

Re: P/e ?

Most PE are Ni-Cu-Zn Alloy, called also German Silver or Alpacca: it's not hard material and you'll easily drill with a good steel/carbon bit: just the bit needs a "mate dot" to not to slip (just do the mate hole with a sharp punch).

Some other PE sets are brass or even Steel: brass is not so hard (but worst than Alpacca to be drilled) but Steel is hard...

Re: P/e ?

I use a sharp straight pin to make the "starter mark" or "mate dot" Gio mentioned. I press the pin into the metal sheet supported by a hard surface so the pin won't distort the part when I press down hard. You can make a handy tool by drilling a hole ( usually 0.5 mm) in the end of a chunk of sprue and sliding the shaft of the pin in. It's much easier on the fingers if you think you'll be using it a lot.
