NEwb 87 s-10 ?'s

Hey, first post here. I got a couple ?'s on 87 S-10. I just bought this truck (first vehicle) and cant even drive it yet, turn 16 in 3 months. First question, does anyone know where I can get the owner's manual for this truck, it didnt have one, and do I need one? 2nd, the head liner is real bad and I want to replace it, I already took the foam and fabric off, all I need is new foam and fabric to go over the top, anybody know where I can get that? I just realized driving this thing in the winter is horrible its 2wd, I'm sliding everywhere. Is the only thing to help is sand in the box and good snow tires in back? Last one for now, does anyone have any experience with this truck, pros and cons, what will usually break first? Thanks
~KC

Hey man, welcome to AF. I had an '85 S-10 with the 2.8L V6 and the biggest problem you'll probably run into is the carburator sucks so get use to it, LOL. Even though I had a lot of trouble with mine, I still liked it and wouldn't mine owning another one some day. The manual can probably be had at a dealership possible. As for the liner try and find a local auto shop that does headliners. Well thats about as much as I can be of help, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks, since mine is an 87 isn't it fuel injected(I think its was the first year for fuel injection) so it has no carb, am I right? Also I just got a gift certificate for amazon books, anyone know of any good books I could buy for this particular truck?

Re: NEwb 87 s-10 ?'s

I'll try to help.

1. Check out www.lmctruck.com for anything you might need. They have pretty much everything you can want for the truck (original and some aftermarket, and books too). This will handle your manual and headliner.
2. Winter driving: Lots of weight in the back and slow starts. Besides that's one of the fun parts of having an S10.
3. Have the brake system, heater core, and electrical checked. Get a complete brake job now, if you can afford it. ($400.00 to $600.00). Replace the fuel pump in the tank and the fuel lines. I had all these system break at the most inopportune time. ( driving on the highway at 120kms, not fun !!!)

An owners manual can be found on Ebay.com
If you dont see one today be patient and keep trying.

You will find many S10 parts there. Good luck

hey , one of the other guys above reccomends LMC.I have found that they are the best way to replace parts for a older style s-10. right now i am restoring a 84 s-10 and I ordered alot of parts. LMC had very fast shipping and all the parts were in stock. My favorite part about them is you may call and request a free catolog specifically for your truck. They then send you a catolg of all of the parts to build your truck from the ground-up along with accessories and extra stuff. This is great because you dont have to search though lists of parts for your specific year model engine size ect becuase they send you the catolog of only parts that will fit your specific truck. the number to request your free personal catolog is: 1 800 LMC TRUCK~ Also some one mentioned ebay, you can find alot of awsome deals on ebay but BE VERY CAREFUL. Some sellers make there stuff look really good with a cheap price but the quality is crap! Then again I have saved quite a bit on good deals from ebay.~ good luck with your truck

Heya,
Heh welcome to the club, just found this site myself today...awesome!
As for your truck, hopefully you'll have as much fun as I've had (built and owned 5 or 6 working on building another now)
For your headliner issue:
I'm being serious now, don't bother wasting lots of $$$ buying a replacement. A good workaround (and looks better than the original) is take measuments of the roof. Get a heavy duty cardboard (refrigerator boxes work great). Go to a fabric store pick out the material, stop a a bodyshop supply place grab a can of 3-M trim adhesive. Cut and clue (sparingly!) the fabric to the cardboard (It'll look wrinkley at first but will tighten as it dries), voila new headliner.

It might take a couple tries to get it just right, but even if you try it 4 or 5 times it's still cheaper than buying one new (well, depending on the cloth you pick).

Sam
Wolf1477, HTH, sorry I couldn't be a bit clearer.

Well I dont have an '87 S-10 but i do have a '92 and i have 2 suggestions for winter depending on how sever they are in your area. 1) Studded all the way around is the best way to go that way you can still maintain most of your steering ability. 2) Any weight you put in the back will help just make sure it's not gonna slide around, had some cinderblocks in mine and going around a bend the hit the side of the box and took the rear end of the truck with it.

I need a first car and my parents will give me their '87 S10. It has a 2.5 liter fuel injected 4 cylinder engine. It is 2WD and a regular cab. I am trying to decide whether to restore this truck or buy something else. I have come up with some sites that have parts(replacement original or performance parts). JC Whitney has a lot of parts at www.jcwhitney.com. Summit racing has more performance parts at www.summitracing.com, and Jegs has parts at www.jegs.com. www.shopcarparts.com has great stock replacement parts, you just put in the Make, Model, and year of your truck and it gives you all of the parts. Here is a link for the 87 S10 http://www.shopcarparts.com/cgi-bin/...del=S10+PICKUP. I don't know if that worked or not. Hope that helped.
