Check Engine Light Help!!!
Hello all,
I drove my truck recently off road, and low and behold the service engine soon light came on. I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado with ~120K miles on it, 5.3 litre V8, 4wd. Wasn't wailing on the truck, but it could be a factor possibly? The dilemma I am presented with: Buy a cheapo internet code reader and see if I can fix the problem myself (I work on my older jeep pretty regularly, but never delved into something with OBDII), or take it to a shop, and pay $90 for a diagnoses, and see how much extra it will cost me... WHat kind of problems cause this light to come on? Can someone with moderate experience tackle a lot of the issues? And would it be worth it to have the code reader at the end of the day? Thanks for your thoughts! |

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
There is no answer to your query without a code. Autozone will read the codes, free.

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
Awesome! Thanks. Didn't think to call them, they don't do it in my area, but Pep Boys does, off I go!

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
Pep Boys says the code is P1415. He cleared it and said that if it comes back I have an issue, but if not then it may have been a fluke, anyone else have that code?

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
your code is air sys bank 1. there should be a brain operated diverter valve brain open or closes valve using vac lines . check vac lines but valve may have stuck giving code that may not come back. good luck

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
When I got P1415, it was a rusted (shut) Secondary Air Injection Check Valve. In my case, I got P1416 a few weeks later (the same part but other side).
Parts are available at AC Delco Parts Store or www.rockauto.com. //2000CAYukon |

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
Thanks for the input, so far it hasn't come back, hoping it stays gone, but if it comes back on I will look at the valves, any information on where they are located or how hard they were to replace? I am hoping the bumpy roads simply triggered something to be unhappy and it is now happy again!

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
It will come back if the valve is rusted close (It came back for me after I cleared the code). It takes a few trips for the light to come back on.
The valves are easy to replace and are above the exhaust manifolds on both sides. //2000CAYukon |

Re: Check Engine Light Help!!!
Thanks, I appreciate the information, I will drive it around and test it out, see if I can't get it to return!
