Unlock RDS radio -?

Does anyone know of an alternative method to unlock a replacement RDS radio in a 2000 Impala LS ? The dealers are asking way too much ( in my opinion) to hook up their scantool and do the activation procedure. Thanks.

Only Correct way to do it is with their scan tool. Had a friend who pulled the Power lead to one of the ICs, Would say ERROR on startup for 5, bout would work normally after that. But Im not sure which chip it is or which lead on the chip.

Thanks for the info. I've read about an internal mod to unlock RDS but nothing detailed. Looks like I am going to be stuck going to a dealer for this.
