Hey there guys,
I'm new here & my Turn Lamps & Brake lamps Stoped working a few days ago they worked one evening then the next morning they didn't work & this has me stumped. All bulbs are Good & Rear tail harness continuity tests are good. Does anybody know what the problem is? I replaced the Multifunction Flasher yesterday but to no avail. they still don't work. When you turn the flashers on all bulbs flash. But when the turn signal is turned on nothing happens or lights up in the dash or exterior & when the Brake pedal is pressed only the High Stop comes on.. Will the DTC tell me what is wrong? Hey Bowtiebandit you seem to be the Guru . Do you have any insight on what is going on with this car. All wiring is in Tip Top shape as it came from the Factory. Car has 68,000 miles on it also. Thanks Chris |

Did you replace the flasher or the switch? Sounds to me like the multifunction switch ie the piece that activates it went south on you. Try fiddling with the lever and see if anything works, also try the same with the hazard switch and see if it works. If it does the switch is the culprit.

I have this same Problem with this car. The problem started over the period of a week.
At first there was intermittent failure of the Left & Right stop lights while the center stop light would work. Currently the Left & Right stop light do not turn on at all now. The center stop light still works. The switch at the brake pedal has been checked, and is good. Wiring to the lights is good. Bulbs are good. ----- Another problem that developed at about the same time as this one is intermittent ability to use my blinkers reliably. The right blinker works more reliably than the left but both have intermittent failures. The failures are exhibited as fast blinking, or no blinking at all. Generally, jiggling the stick and trying agian will get the blinkers to work. ===== Any help on these issues would be appreciated. From my searches here I have seen a few people with similiar problems unfortunately I did not turn up a resolution and so must ask. Thank you all in advance. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- bowtiebandit, Based on what you posted above is there another switch device in the steering column that could be the culprit. I'm not 100% familiar with the full layout of the wiring in this car. However, I have taken the brake pedal switch off an verified the functionality of that switch. I have not checked the turn signal switch or anything related to parts within the steering column. |

Nothing else in the column but the switch. The white wire from the brake light switch feeds into the multifunction switch when you depress the brake pedal

Turned out to be the Multi-function switch in the steering column and said wiring harness for it. Turn signal and Lower stop lights now fully functional.

Re: 98 Lumina No Stop Lamps or Turn Lamps
Do the same repair as the other dude did. It will also fix your problem.

Re: 98 Lumina No Stop Lamps or Turn Lamps
I am having a similiar issue with my Lumina. My third brake light (window) works, but my regular brake lights don't. My blinkers work and if I jiggle the handle all brake lights work but my blinkers won't. I have ruled our fuse and bulb problems. Is it possible that a wire could have come loose leading to the multi function switch given that the jiggling works- or the switch is bad all together?

Re: 98 Lumina No Stop Lamps or Turn Lamps
These switches are notorious for going out; the contacts inside the switch itself get bent away over time. You MIGHT be able to bend them back, but I'd just spring for a new switch. At least with new stuff you get a cool neato warranty..sometimes.

Re: 98 Lumina No Stop Lamps or Turn Lamps
I found out it was the Turn Signal Switch. I hadn't thought of that because the turn signal was actually working...those switches are just as expensive! Thanks!

Re: 98 Lumina No Stop Lamps or Turn Lamps
I am having issues and have traced them to needing to replace the turn signal switch. However I'm coming up with insane differences in price. If I look the part up on the internet, I come up with two choices - one for with the stereo on the steering wheel, one for without. I can't get another option to come up anywhere, but everyplace I call says I need a different one that runs anywhere from 3X to 6X the price of the ones I can find. Supposedly because I have cruise control. Can anyone explain how I can find this part listed anywhere?
