I noticed recently that the parking brake on my 98 S-10 doesn't stay engaged when I push the pedal down. The brake works just like the regular brake, push it down and it works but doesn't stay working. I tried messing with the hand release and pushing the pedal down harder but it stays the same. I would guess it's in the pedal mechanism. Am I right?

Is the parking brake pedal and mechanism easily removed for repair?

Re: Parking Brake
I had this same problem..the pedal assembley comes out rater easily. I found when the assembly was out that the plastic inside the assemble which holds the spring in place was cracked and therefore was not allowing it o ratchet and latch. Resolution..buy a new assemple for around 100 bucks.

Re: Parking Brake
I had the exact same problem on my 02. I just bought a new one for 75 bucks. it is a pain getting up under the dash to do the replacement. also is pretty tough to get the lever assembly disconnected from the brake cable.

Re: Parking Brake
know this thread is a few months old, but have to agree with J-cat's method. is just a lack of lube. had same problem on my 98 s-10. if not fixed yet, move seat all the way back and lay down on floorboard(NOT comfortable) so you can see the release cable and the little lever it is attached to. push this little lever toward the engine compartment, if it moves slightly, then try to set parking brake. if it sets AND holds, then just apply the lubricant as J-cat said. wd40, pb blaster, or whatever you prefer. if this does NOT solve the problem, then a new assembly will most likely be required. good luck.
