maybe axle...i dont know

I have a metal to metal sound, along with a knocking sound coming from my front end. The steering also gets shakey. What are the odds that it is the axle even if it looks good. And what could it be other than an axel? Thanks in advance!

front end is very diffused area. there are MANY things up there that can produce metal on metal sound.
1. is it present when not moving, or onloy when moving?
2. which side of the car front is it coming from?
3. does it get worse in tight turns?
4. what kind of sound is it? rub, squeak, scraping, you mentioned knocking, what else?
5. try to ahve helper drive in a large parking lot, while you walk next to the car, on both sides. helps to locate source.
6. pop bonnet open, do you hear that sound with engine running?
7 is it relevant to having transmission engaged?

that's your homework, bud.

Re: maybe axle...i dont know

1. only when moving-slow or fast -it doesnt matter
2. driver side -wheel area
3. it doesnt get worse in turns-it stays the same
4. a scraping sound similar to pads on rotors- the knocking sound gets faster with my speed but both sounds do not change with turning or braking
6. no sounds are heard while parked and changing gears does not change the sound
its a crx 5-speed--------thank for your reply

Re: maybe axle...i dont know

1. splash shield on brakes
2. ball joint
3. strut assembly

those are the 1st culprits that come to my head

4. hub bearing

driveaxle shows itself usually in turns, esp, for some reason, when you go in reverse.

what year is your crx? which way is timing belt - towards pass or driver side?

5. engine mount on that side

knock can be also produced by lose wheel nuts and ripped cord in the tire.

i'd start with lifting the car and tugging on the wheel on that side, with hands on 3-9 and 6-12. very vigorously. then, grab tierod end and tug it back and for. ball joint is harder to check, got to have a skill to do this.
arrange so that you can free spin the tire, and pay attention to the tire edge - is it perfectly smooth or goes in wavy pattern?

what condition are the brake pads in, not to forget about the obvious? it might be pad ware gauge telling it's time to change pads.
are rotors blue in color? do you have any shiny circles on rotors, like as if something was grinding through them?
strut mounting bolts in the tire well - are they snug?
flash light up into the spring mount - any signs of torn rubber spacer on the top?
which ever way it goes, scrape is something moving against something else. knock is usually up-down impact. knock i'd rather blame on engine, but if it does not produce it whilsr not moving--- then sure it's something either in the hub or in brakes or in suspension. splash shield is about the only thing that can scrape on rotor, nothing else is moving in rotary manner there.
that's all under circumstance engine runs-car does not move=no noise.
good weekend project...
