How do I remove my trailer hitch?

I have a 2001 Ford Escape XLT 4wd. It has the trailer package on it with the smaller trailer hitch. I am in the process of ordering a class 3 hitch, (just to be able to use my 2" bike carrier). It looks like I am going to run into a problem with the old one when I install the new receiver. If I remember right, the old hitch is welded to the underside of the body and not bolted on. How will I remove this to make room for the new hitch? I was thinking sawzall or an angle grinder with a metal cutting disk. I've seen other Escapes with the class 3 hitch but only on the road and I wasn't able to take a look underneath. Thanks for any help....

Take it to a muffler shop and have them cut it off with an acetylene torch.

Thanks for your help on this subject also! I figured it would need to be cut, but with the double wall I wasn't sure if a metal cutting disk would work. Thanks again.

Re: How do I remove my trailer hitch?

If you're only carrying 2 bikes, you might be able to get away with a converter to turn the receiver from 1.5 inch to 2 inch. I dunno if this is an option for you.

Re: How do I remove my trailer hitch?

I've noticed that the trailer hitch goes up and behind the bumper. Instead of paying someone to remove it, I'll try and remove it myself. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the bumper?
