2000 GP GT Tune-up

Greetings,

I'm looking at getting a tune-up on my 2000 GP GT. I contacted my mechanic and asked him what exactly a tune-up involves. He said they change the plugs, wires, and fuel filter. Does that sound about right? I thought there would be more involved, but I digress to the experts on this forum for your opinions. Should I be looking or asking for anything else to be done during a tune-up?

thats about it. might also want to think about running a can of seafoam in your gas tank to clean up the fuel injectors too.

What is the mileage on this GT? It really depends on your mileage on what ignition components should be changed during a so called tune up. If original Delco plugs and wires they are supposed to be good for 100K miles.

It's hard to define a tune-up because there's many different things a tune-up could or should include. It really depends on what you think or know your car needs. My version of a "tune-up" is replacing and changing everything included in the term "regular maintenence". It usually doesn't work that way though because certain things get done at certain times. My full tune-up is plugs, wires, fluids change and top-off, filter changes, brake check, so on and so forth.

Many thanks to all who replied. You've given me some great insight. I will definitely add an air filter in there, but will do that myself as in the past. I, like a lot of guys like to do any work within my capabilities myself. I know when I'm out of my element or don't have the proper tools to leave it to the experts. Brakes, I'm not going to fool with, changing the blower motor and resistor no problem but what a pain in the arse to get to. Thank god I'm left handed :-)

The PCV valve suggestion is something else I hadn't considered and will mention it to my mechanic and see what he thinks. I trust the mechanics where I take the car and feel comfortable in that they won't sell me something I don't need.

The brakes are all new, just had them done last month and I know as a matter of routine they check all fluids and levels.

Whoops, sorry about that. I thought I posted the mileage... Never thought I'd be able to type faster then my mind works? I should also use the preview option. Mileage just passed 100,000k. I do my best to look after the car. Regular maintenance etc. Heck even washing the car is an all day event for me. Wash, dry, clay bar, glaze, wax... You know the routine. Most of my friends think I'm nuts.

Regarding the mechanics. Yup, I know it's not a statement a lot of people echo, but honestly I trust these guys. The shop is clean and very organized, the guys are very helpful. They don't rush you into decisions, rather they give you the options and explain everything in detail. On a couple of occasions I couldn't arrange for a drive to take me home after dropping off the car. No problem, they drove me home and picked me up when the work was done, on time I might add too. Very professional shop.

Anyway, I appreciate all the great insight.
