2000 Taurus 3.0 vulcan Purging air pockets?
Finally, I checked the waterpump, flushed system beforehand and to my disappointment, it seemed okay and impellers were good; just a little rusty. I put the new one in anyway at 142,000km. I'm thinking I have serious air pockets in system as coolant bottle filled up after short drive and was overflowing the new coolant. I thought I purged it a little, by letting it idle with the Ac on high for like 6-7 minutes. What is the best method to purge the air out? No bleeder screw here.
Also the heater was acting irratically from hot to warm to cold. It was okay before. I have a little issue with the coolant cap not holding the pressure or theres too much? I tried getting a new one at AZ but they didnt have one to fit the cheap dorman tanks they sell. The original caps have a different thread and wont screw on this tank I have. Trying a little teflon tape, around the thread for now. Fans are coming on to prevent from overheating and gauge is normal. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, almost at wits end. Okay got a used tank from wreckers and it has lots of cracks but holding for now.see what happens. Last edited by raybuick; 07-21-2009 at 09:36 AM. Reason: update |

Running the engine until normal operating temp and then running the HEATER on full heat and high fan helps.
I usually squeeze the upper coolant hose to get remaining air pockets.

Raise the front of vehicle(safely) so the radiator cap is the highest point on the cooling system. Remove cap and run vehicle until thermostat opens. This will allow the air to rise to the top. Then shut off and let sit for about 10 minutes. Try again if needed.

Re: 2000 Taurus 3.0 vulcan Purging air pockets?
I have a '97 3.0 Vulcan (172k+). If you have the factory degas bottle (the plastic tank that holds the overflow coolant), the system is "self-purging". You never need to purge it of entrained air.
For the record, I also don't squeeze radiator hoses - ever. I know people say to do this to check for viability, or in this case - to purge air, but I think it's a bad idea. Rubber hoses must be of better quality today because I've never replaced a single radiator hose in over 20+ years of driving and servicing my three cars ('89, '97, '02). None of these cars have ever developed a bubble or any kind of leakage problem with a radiator hose - and I drive my cars FOREVER. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I think there's more to it than that... |
