Tire noise? 08 SS

Recently purchased a preowned 08 Impala SS. Started to notice some tire noise or humming/howling coming from the rear-end area (it is front wheel drive). Could it be the tires? Could it be the rear axle shafts? Have never owned a vehicle with low profile tires, or at least this low. Is this a by product of this type of tire?

Re: Tire noise? 08 SS

See if the tires are scalloped, the tread is rough or raised in some areas this is the most common reason for this condition, usually the front get like this from aggresive driving, but they may have been rotated.

Re: Tire noise? 08 SS

Thanks for the help. Bottomline, perhaps a new set of tires for the car is in the future.

What kind and size of tires are you running? Are they directional? And does the noise get louder as you speed up?

Re: Tire noise? 08 SS

the tires on these cars are Z rated...and are directional tires. as suggested above, make sure the tires are mounted on the rims the right way. there will be a directional arrow which will point which way the tire should spin. as crazy as it seems...i had new tires put on my SS a while back and someone mounted them the wrong way which caused a pretty loud ride...

of course also check tire pressure too

Yes they are directional. All of them are facing outwards as the tire describes. And yes it does seem to progress as the speed increases.

or perhaps a loose nut on the spindle. If they were tightened to much at the factory they wear out quickly.

FWD No spindles. Hub assembly bolted to Knuckle, Half shaft is shoved in and bolted to the hub.
