speed sensitive steering
Hi,
I have a 97 K1500. The steering has gotten hard while parking a few times. So I'm wondering if the speed sensitive steering might cause this? I only have a 96 manual and there is nothing in this set about it. So I figured that the feature started in 97. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob B

Speed sensitive steering? Sorry to say, but that would be a luxury for any truck. More likely, either the fluid is low or the pump or steering box is wearing out. Any excessive groaning while turning the wheel? Does it get easier if the engine is revved? Some steering fluid stop leak might help, but never a guarantee. Hope this helps!

To verify you have the EVO (Electronic Variable Orifice) steering system on your truck, check for a wiring connection at the bottom back side of the pump.
If you do have this system, then yes, the EVO solenoid on the back of the pump may cause the trouble you are having. However, as posted above, it could also be the pump or box. Try sucking all the old fluid out of the reservoir and replacing it with fresh power steering fluid a couple of times and see what happens.

It took me less than an hour to replace my EVO sensor on my 97. They are about $70 at the dealer. If you crawl under your dash on your back you'll see it around the shaft with a connector going up towards the steering wheel. You just need a 15mm wrench for the shaft bolt & a small screwdriver for opening the retainer holding the sensor. The more common symptom is a slipping feel when going around a slight corner at a moderate speed. I hear you can have them tested. I posted detailed inst. here but it was a long time ago. I think you'll find a lot of info if you search EVO sensor. You need to be cautious around all the airbag business under the dash.
