I've been getting a check eng lite for about two weeks. Stalling when cold, barely holding an idle, and sluggish on acceleration, plus lousey milage. This after a long blazing trip from colo to tx and back. I kept zeroing out the codes by disconnecting the neg batt terminal and touching it to the pos for 15 sec.
I finally replaced all 4 O2 sensors, fuel filt and plugs. I still got the lite, soooo i finally read the code p0171 and p0174 (lean bank 1 and 2) with my cheap obd reader. Took it to my local guy who uses a laptop for a more in depth look = more codes. The net result was a hole you could stick a pencil through in the EGR hose that runs over to the pcv valve on the right cam cover. This is a hard plastic tube with rubber connector hoses on each end. The hole was in the 4" rubber hose near the EGR valve. Problem solved and milage is up and so is drivability. I just thought you all should know.

This is a corregated stainless tube, and sure enough, it was broken at the first wrinkle, so the EGR has not been functioning for a while now and of course it woun't hold a vacuum, so it is being replaced too. Lord knows what this will cost, but it needed to be done. I'll report cost soon. mike |

total cost = $107.30 for the EGR, $76.08 for the pipe, shop supplies were $6.67, and labor was $112.50, for a total of $302.55+ tax my work was done by a "private garage" and an ASE certified mechanic who is a friend of mine. Lord knows what a "ford" dealership would charge . I just thought you all should know. mike |

As the saga continues, took a trip to cheyene from denver on tuesday, and made it most of the way back before the check eng lite came on.
It was that pesky code p-0401, ( low flow EGR). I read an old post from 03 that said you need to clean the horse shoe shaped passage under the elbow behind the throttle body. when I lifted the gasket I found the entire passage full of carbon. A few minutes with a screwdiver and some brake cleaner and problem solved. I should have done this when I replaced the EGR, and both jobs would have gone much smoother. The 4 10mm bolts are not that big of a deal, and it sure improves access to all that stuff by the firewall. ![]() mike |
