Engine noise when shut off

Our 02 Grand Caravan make a growling noise in the engine are when turning off. Can this be the alternator?

doesn,t have to be replaced right away as long as you can put up with the noise. the noise is also there when idling and driving you probley don't notice it because the whine has been there for awhile. you will notice a dfferance in the engine sound when you replace it.

we're taking the family on a roadtrip from Missouri to NC and back - given that, should be replace?
