2000 Chevy Silverado AC went out

Made a 10hr trip and AC worked great there, Coming home it would NOT work at all. I've checked Fuses...weren't blown. Had engine at idle and hit the AC switch, looked under hood and clutch is not engaging. Any ideas on my next step? Relay? Low pressure?

Auto or manual AC?
Any AC control lights comig on as they should?
And signs of leakage or oil leakage spots on ac system?
We need some low and high side pressure readings.
Is compressor getting 12 volts to hot side?
If not jumper compressor with a 12 volt fused jumper and see if compressor kicks on?

If so give use low and high side pressure readings with engine running and compressor jumped.

Post back how it goes.

what do you mean by auto or manual? It has a AC switch. The lights do come on. Where or how do i get the pressure readings?

auto means it automaticly regulates temp/fan speeds etc..
Manual means you do it...

It appears you don't know much about these a/c componets..therefore I suggest you either get a manual/or bring to a hvac repair center..

since you had a good working system and suddenly no operation,,something major failed...hose/condenser hit by object making a hole, cracked metal tubing,compressor clutch coil open, or maybe a fuse..

this is more than changing a light bulb...equiptment is required to test inspect ,,meter volt/ohm,,,guage set for pressures...leak detector..and knowledge of using these test devices and where to / when to test..

check all fuses,,maybe you will luck out

I charged the ac system to aprox 40 psi and the compressors clutch would engage then off and on continously...will not stay on longer then i say 30 seconds. Still no Cold air. any thoughts?

What with and how are you charging it?
Not with a one hose one gauge walmart death kit I hope?

If it is that low on pressure you need to pump it out and add a complet right charge.
Also check for where your leak is.

You cannot properly and safely recharge an air condition system with them.

The one side stop and go gauge does not tell you what your system is doing or is over charged or undercharged.
A overcharged or malfunction air condition system can reach over 500 lbs of pressure.
Enough to blow up that can or system and freeze you at first and the burn you or blind you and if any propane /butane in there blow and light you up.

The stop leak crap and who knows what kind of oil in the kits there will stop your system for sure.
Just like pouring super glue in it.
And some kits even contain freon with a butane mixer.
Good for a big blast.

If you are going to do it do it right and safe.

In the older days you could just throw in a can and go.
But over the years just adding freon is getting harder to do.
Newer systems have to have the correct amount of freon down to the ounces.
Most will need pumped down and vacuumed down and the right and amount of oil and a set amount freon charge installed to get the air to cool right and the system to last.
If an air condition is low there is usually a leak that needs fixed and also a lose of lubricating oil from system.
Also air and moisture enters a low system
If you are going to try to do it get the proper type air condition gauge set with the low and high side gauges.
Hook up the gauges and get a reading with compressor running at idle and at 2000 rpm on the high and low side.
Post back pressure reading and we can help you.

do you have a solid 40psi, with the fan/a/c on max,,,with the windows open,,,idle increased to about 1200rpm ??????

the a/c compressor should not cut in/out then....
when the pressure falls to below 10-20psi onlythen will it cut out...this is to protect the compressor from lack of refrigerent/oil....

was your system totally empty???did you find the leak ???how much R134 in OZ. did you put in ????

you must be careful on what products to use,,,for now just add the R134....

with the air temp outside around 80deg F I would expect 45-50psi...no more...than that...at any time...
