Idle surges in park and oil light comes on

I just bought a 93 grand am for my daughter to go to collage. The idle will go up and down ( 300-1000RPM) when it is in park but not while driving it. The oil light came on a couple of times briefly and goes out. The needle on the gauge keeps going up and down at idle but it is fine while driving. Can any one help me out?

What engine and how many miles?
Haqve you checked for trouble codes?

Surging is probley a vacuum leak, though could be the IAC - idle air control vavle.

it is time for new pcv valve, $ 2.49 will solve your idle jumping up and down. This mostly happens when engine gets warm right? Oil light will come on because of the low rpm range due to the stuck pcv pintle inside when the pcv heats up. (low rpm=low oil pressure) so just install new pcv valve and you will be happy. good luck.

I replaced the plugs and wires on saturday. I also replaced 2 suspect vacume hoses. It's a little better and doesn't surge as bad but it still does. By the way it has a 3.3 liter and 150,000 miles. I'll try the pcv valve and clean the IAC valve. Where is the pcv located?

pcv valve should be on the one of the valve covers. Above cylinder #6, usually bigger vacuum line connects to it.

pcv on the 3.3 is on the pass side of the engine, toward the back.

Thank you for the help and the picture was great. I am having trouble locating a pcv valve though. I went to 2 parts stores and they don't carry it. I think they are full of it.

Doesnt it have an "L" bend on top that goes to the vacuum line ?

If they cant find one in their part lists just try looking at the ones they have out in the racks, you should be able to find one very simular if not the same.
