Diagnostic Tools? 2002 Turbo S

Hi, I just bought a 2002 Turbo S, fun car, already in shop........ had to "defrag" the computer?? WTF?? it originally wouldn't start and it wasn't the fuel pump or the relay. All fixed $220 later, pick it up tomorrow.

My question is, what tools are involved in this type of operation? I'd assume a code reader and something else to reset the computer.., what other "special" tools should I have? Cost? A Bently manual is a must, I know, $80+.

My skill level I would rate at just below Pro tech as I've been building my own cars and computers for some 20 yrs now. Yet I'm not a pro mechanic.

Any help is welcomed and needed. I started with German cars 14 yrs ago with a 1984 GTI, and to BMW's from there.

What the dealership uses is Vag-Com computer vehicle programming. You can't get it. Only the dealership. The Bently manual is ok if you anticipate problems. I don't own one. I just go by my service manual and everything has been just fine. Since you just bought this used the water pump and timing belt are a must do if it has not already been done.

Thanks for the reply, you're definately right about the timing belt & wp, http://www.ross-tech.com/ sells a Vag-Com I don't know if its the same one but I've heard it was very helpful. My GF is picking the car up today for me and I've got some decisions to make. Do you have a Bentley or the factory Svc manual?

How much did the manual cost? I have a 2002 Turbo S 180hp 1.8 6 speed 93K miles

Save your money. Just use the forum as your service guide. We're OK with it. With 93k on the car here are some other issues to conquer.
1. Spark plugs every 40k. The dealer lets me use spark plug removal tool.
2. Air cleaner every 40k or sooner
3. Cabin air filter every 10-15k
4. Fuel filter every 40k
5. Oil and filter every 5k(Check oil every 1k) VW's use oil and are prone to sludge.
6. Brake fluid every 2k (Dot 4)
7. Coolant add as needed. Considered a lifetime fluid. No flush unless problems develop. Use VW coolant only. Never added any to mine.
8. Power steering fluid as needed. Lifetime fluid. VW fluid only
9. Drive belt as needed.
10.Again the timing belt and water pump.
11. No mileage service to transmission necessary. (Service as needed) I have over 80k on my clutch. 2000 model
12. Brake pads as needed.
Just stay up on your service as I stated above. No major issues mechanically with my 2000. VW's are like babies. They will cry when there's a problem, and quiet when all is good!
