Mazda 2002

my wife minivan broke two lugs off the front left tire but before they broke the car was making a loud bumping noise on that side any ideas what happen

Are you sure the lugs were properly tightened ? Had any recent tire or suspension work done ? Change a flat tire recently ? You should check the rim and make sure the holes in the wheel , where the lugs bolts go through , aren't wallowed out . If the wheels lug nuts were loose and the wheel could wiggle around on the hub , the holes may not be round anymore and the lug nuts wouldn't tighten properly . This could have caused the bumping noise ( as the wheel wobbled ) which led to the lug nut failure . Should have all your wheels checked to be safe . keep us updated on what you find out .
