1990 cherokee stalling
well in case anybody else had the same symptoms as me if it will run while in crank position but stall as soon as key was returned to run position check the ballast resistor on the 1990 cherokee it is the white ceramic peice on the drivers side front fender wall cost about $5 at autopart store easy fix

How many miles?
This is one of the symptoms of a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor - it just dies.

Hmmm yeah, with the start button there may be some electrical issue....and I'm not the one to help diagnose it. Someone should be along shortly with some help.

Umm, this resistor was a fuel pump resistor to drop voltage running for noise reduction. If it goes, it'll cause die out as the pump isn't running except during cranking.
It looks like the old ballast resistor and the symptoms are indeed similar.
