A/C relay clicks rapid fire compressor wont run

I have a 94 Lumina APV van I purchased two years ago and A/C never worked. Last week the pulley bearing went on compressor forcing me to repair for serpentine belt. I decided to fix A/C in the process. I installed a remanufactured compressor and replaced both low and high pressure switches on back of compressor. I vacuum pumped the system for 45 minutes and it held at 30hg for over an hour before adding first can of refrigerant. Compressor would not kick on and after looking in manual I found the A/C relay missing from right front of engine compartment. I purchased a new A/C relay from Chevrolet dealer and when I turn on A/C relay clicks rapid fire and compressor still wont kick on. I'm thinking I have a dead short somewhere but don't know where to look. I have unplugged A/C relay as the last owner must have. I do not have a wiring diagram for A/C circuit.

I'd say just the opposite of a dead short- you have a low voltage to relay- probably 6-7 volts- not enough to hold contacts in- that is why it is constantly on and off--need to check voltage feeds to relay and look for bad wiring and/or connections- corrosion is your enemy here- look for corroded terminals and the like.

Re: A/C relay clicks rapid fire compressor wont run

This van did not run when I got it. I figure A/C problem is also a wiring problem. This van had fuseable links at starter burned out when I acquired it. Engine computer was also fried. Van sat for 9 years until I revived it in 2007 with 92,000 miles on it. Company that owned it gave up on it and it was shuffled to two other people trying to get it running before i got it. It runs very good but would be nice to finally have A/C. If one of you guys can post an A/C circuit diagram or trouble tree for a 94 3.1 it would be of great help.
