tinting windshileds and side windows

Can you tint your windshield and/or side windows in the U.S. or Canada? If not, how can you get around the laws?

i dont know about the windsheild but i know your allowed to tint your side windows. But only to a certain degree. You can get ticketed for having your windows too dark.... Yes.. i still remember drivers ed lol

also... how do you tint your windows? Is it just putting a sheet of dark clear plastic on the inside or is it an acutal process?

You put a sheet of tinted plastic on the window. My father owns his own glass business and they tint windows, so I know this for a fact. I have even tinted windows personally before. Perhaps there exist other processes to tint windows, but this is how it is typically done. The process is not perfect, as you have to have the tinted plastic a bit smaller than the actual window to avoid complications with the edges of the plastic not sticking to the glass.

You can't tint the front windshield, except for that little band at the very top. Side front windows are only allowed to a certain degree(usually 35% or higher) if at all.

I saw a car just last week with a "band" of tint across the top of the windshield but also another band of tint across the bottom of it too! Is this allowed?

You can pretty much tint whichever window (even the windshield) to your desired preference, it's just whether you get caught. There are some pretty hefty fines. Most states allow 35% and lower from sides around. I don't believe any states legally allow the windshield but I have seen it. Also, the color of your interior can play to your advantage. A lighter interior will allow you to go darker with the tint, and not likely get caught (unless them boys just have to pull out that meter). But a darker interior will make a lower defraction percentage seem a little darker. **Tip-to-the-wise** try to keep your rear windows darker than the front, even if your already going illegal. Most cops will use that as a guide, on whether they screw with your tint or not. It's more commonly legal to have the rear tinted as much as 10% more than the front in passenger cars. Lastly, a light colored car with say 50% WILL stand out. keep the blatently dark tints on dark cars.

Re: tinting windshileds and side windows

My step-father is the chief of police and all of my windows are tinted with 5% tint. The windshield has about a 9" wide strip across it. In NY, the cops really don't bust your balls too much. The back windows can be tinted as dark as you like. The 2 front have to be a certain percentage, if they are darker they are illegal. The strip across the windshield is only supposed to come down like 6" otherwise it too is illegal.
