Another Parking Brake Question

99 silverado z71 155k.....replaced the parking brake again. Bought wagner (locally) set with inner and outer clips. I have installed them as per the manual and closed the adjuster all of the way and then backed off 1/4 turn. The brakes apply but still will not hold the truck in neutral. The new clips will help, but should the 1/4 be enogh to hold the truck being that the liners are new?? The levers are fully opened when the cable is pulled. I may just need some adjusting. The last time I adjusted them I had them rub while driving down the road. Any tips on a fine adjustment???

Oh yeah...it seems that the shoes are made by the same company that make the ac/delco ones, same printing on the side of the metal and on the shoe itself.

My 2001 had them when new but failed soon after warranty.
I had new rear pads shoes and rotors put on last week at the Chevy dealer.
Parking brake did not hold truck in neutral, I brought it back and they tell me, (service advisor and technician) all is OK and the parking brake is working, and showed me it could not be turned by hand while up on the hoist.
Now I’m stuck as what to do.
Do a charge back on the credit card.
Have them put it in writing the brakes are per specifications.
We have no inspection here in Michigan.

Your parking brake has to hold the vehicle in neutral at a certain grade. I would raise hell at the dealer and make sure your truck is right. Tell them is your truck runs over any kids in the neighborhood, their dealership is going to get sued. Another piss poor dealership raping people and not doing a good job. I know there are some gm mechanics here and they are not in this same category, but your particular dealership should do a better job.

All I have to say is I was screwed before and that is why I let nobody touch anything. Car, truck, boat, pc, large appliances etc. I learn from guys on here and do it myself. Sorry for your experience.

this parking brake failure and GM's/our goverments refusal to correct this faulty design is why I was hoping GM died...they just don't care....GM and NHTSA...

this parking brake fails because the shoes flop around and when in the off position rapidly wear out because of this...

in september I plan on removing my rotors to expose the parking brakes and take pictures for all to learn how I have corrected this problem,,,the shoes can no longer move when de-activated,and therefore will not touch the inner drum....of the rotor..with the vehicle in motion..

Jcat....I donn't know if you saw the 2 clips that come with the wagners. There is the original clip that holds the inside and also another clip that goes over that one and holds the outer part of the show. These 2 clips kind of seat into each other and there is little or no play, as I can see or tell. Thanks for the input, looking forward to seeing the pics of your setup, I may redo mine in september.

don't quote me, but i think the only way to "unbeat a dead horse" is to switch to drum brakes in the rear. there was a word out there that GM did this on some editions because of the continuous problem with rear rotor brakes incorporating parking brakes internally. if it ain't designed right from the get go, clip, no clip, ain't worth a flip.:sarcasm1:

thanks for that info on the wagner shoe kit,,I will check that out...

when I adjust the shoes I adjust the star wheel until the cable shoe on the backing plate is pulled [with the park brake on ] so that its at about 1/3 the way lifted off the backing plate, this is done with the rotor held down by the lugs. With the park brake off, in neutral, rotating the rotor so as to be sure it is not draging..before setting the park brake..then repeat on the other side..

when new this is how it was setup...that the cable dog ear is off the backing plate about 1/3 the way..


I have the original shoe on one side with the single point hold down clip...the other side I have the GM modified clip that was supposed to correct this,,,,NOT...

Its been 2years maybe 3 now and the brakes will hold vehicle in neutral on a grade ,,,in drive it will hold on level ground...

will it hold on the boat ramp NO...what the hell good is it..

Oh yeah, when I go over a bump, I no longer hear a rattling from the rear. I gues that was my pb shoes "floating" around in the drum. We'll see how long this will last.
