92 explorer wont start. fuel problems?

hi all, well i drove out of my driveway today got about 200 yards and my car died. it would not start. after i got it pushed into my driveway again still no start.
if i spray starter fluid into the intake it will start very shortly. does this mean fuel pump, or injector, or relay?? how do i test each one of these things. battery is good, it cranks, new plugs, runs about a second with starting fluid.
any ideas?

The first thing I'd suggest you check is the fuel pump inertia switch. I think on the '92 it's also located at the passenger side kick plate. The owner's manual should specify where it's at. If that switch is not tripped, check for voltage to and from it, along with all the fuses. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, checking the fuel pressure might be easier than checking for voltage to and from the inertia switch.

well found the switch its not that. i dont have a fuel pressure gauge i guess i could get one tommorow. i dont think its the relay because thats supposed to only malfunction when its hot. its not the fuse. so it must be the pump, i dont hear it kick on when i turn the key. it wouldnt be the injectors would it?

Re: 92 explorer wont start. fuel problems?

nevermind, it was the fuel pump. i got it fixed. those fuel line connectors suck big time though.
i ended up pulling the clips out with a knife and using LOTS of pb blaster and just turning the metal hoses.
kinda like how i'd rather break a brake line at the nut so i can use a socket wrench instead of a straight wrench.
and to think i wasted 25$ on ez disconnectors. what a waste of time and money using those things. people make money on those?
i suppose they are easier on the fuel filter though..

Re: 92 explorer wont start. fuel problems?

Thanks for the follow-up post. Did you figure out why it spewed power steering fluid? Was it just from turning the wheel quickly without the engine running?

i really dont know why it was spraying steering fluid. maybe the cap was just loose to begin with. no problems with it now. maybe i should flush that out though. along with my transmission fluid now that i know where the drain plug is.

not unless you make a really good offer. its running good, so i dont have any need to get rid of it. other than the 4 wheel drive not working and getting 14 mpg.
