Would bent valves damage crank bearings?
1995 Towncar/160K miles in excellent cond other than bad motor.
Left bank (cylinders 5-8) has no compression. Timing chain jumped a tooth near crank during a valve stem seal replacmment. The 4.6L is a interference type engine,so the valves bent. ![]() I was thinking about replacing bad valves on the L-bank. * 1) Removed battery * 2) Removed FUSE/RELAY for electric fuel pump. * 3) Disconnected fuel lines * CAUTION- If you need to connect battery, because of Trk pull-down or windows, you don't want low fuel pressure to enable electric fuel pump to dump raw fuel! 4) Removed coolant 5) Removed Heater & coolant hoses 6) Removed fan & Radiator. 7) Disconnected electrical bus harness from engine. 8) Removed Coil packs, and ignition wires from engine. 9) Removed surpertine belt & alternator. 10) Removed Intake. 11) Removed valve cover & cam on L-bank 12) Broke lose all Head bolts on L-bank & busted my dam knuckles. ![]() Is this why so many technicans retire at a Auto part store? Note: Need to disconnect CAT from exhaust manifold. I'am hoping to remove L-head without taking pwr steering,Air cond, and timing chain V-cover a off! Re: Would bent valves damage crank bearings?
Generally speaking, valves bend to easily to do any harm to crank bearings.
I would imagine however.. if anything could position itself just right to stop a traveling piston, that force would be transmitted directly to a rod bearing. Close inspection to the piston tops will determine if any further damage should be sought out. BTW: Not long ago.. you were giving advice to junk these "dime a dozen" 4.6's since they can be found easily just about anywhere..

Re: Would bent valves damage crank bearings?
That's true! CV,MM,and TC's
$250 @ LKQ I would have to pull two motors! & be doing another valve stem seal replacement. This is more like a project type car, because its is in excellent cond. The R-side ''In the car Valve stem seal replacement'' went good, but it was my BAD on the L-side. Just trying to fix my BAD,because this car been so good to me. |

$250 @ LKQ I would have to pull two motors! & be doing another valve stem seal replacement. It's more labor intense than parts! Parts are cheap, and this car still has very little value running. For Sale As is for $800,or $1500 running. This project was a good lesson, see http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=954555 Last edited by danielsatur; 07-13-2009 at 07:56 AM. |
