Engine died, codes 940 & 999

2000 Dodge Caravan

Problem:
I was driving down the road when my engine started chugging and died. When I tried to start it again, all I heard was clicking from the relay/fuse box under the hood. There was no check engine light.

Codes:
This is how I found the codes. Hold down the trip and reset buttons and turn the key to on, two clicks forward. The odometer will say 'CODE' and then gave me two codes, 940 & 999.

I was not able to find any decent answers on what these codes mean, so if someone knows exactly what they mean, please post it.

Solution:
At first I found the ground strap on the back of the engine was badly corroded an was hanging by a thread. Replacing it did not help.

What I found while searching wires was that the EGR valve wire had come off and melted on the exhaust manifold shorting out. It was a white wire with black stripe & a grey wire with yellow stripe. When I separated what was left of the wires, and tried starting the van, it ran. I was not able to put the plug back in as it was melted.

Hope this helps somebody else.

Re: Engine died, codes 940 & 999

Do you and you engine a favor trash the way you described getting the trouble code, 1st I have never seen any of the codes you described. Check it with a scan tool for accurate trouble code, at our shop we always use either a Snap-on Modis or a Mastertech scan tool and lastly a Mac quick scan tool which only gives vague info. The Modis is more precise.

Re: Engine died, codes 940 & 999

For future reference, your test method tested the CCD data bus and not the engine management system. Cycle the key from off to run X3 leaving it at run. Read the codes off your odometer display. You will see a 4 digit code prefixed by the letter "P" meaning PXXXX. Best to use a scanner. AutoZone will scan your codes for free. That said, the 940 bus code was telling you there is some kind of communications failure. Can't say what exactly because my files are on the other side of the country right now. This can potentially cause a stall. The 999 code means the test is complete.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes to reset the data bus. Read the codes before this. It clears the codes.
