2000 Taurus Fuel Pump wrong Guage Readings
I replaced a fuel pump with CARTER brand replacement from Pep Boys.
The gas guage is reading 3/4 when the car is full. I returned the part as defective and got the same model for a Flex fuel extened tank model 2000 Ford Taurus. Same problem.....Vin # tells us the specs of what pump to get....I did it twice...paying mechanics to change the pump (Labor) Does anybody have any info on CARTER parts carried by Pep Boys or is there a calibrating process we are missing when you change a fuel pump. Car runs fine otherwise....Could the sending unit to the guage been damaged on the first install....I don't see how...They disconnected the battery power, unplugged, dropped the tank, reinstalled....Everything is fine except gas guage reradout. Is it part or mechanic? Same part twice...same problem with both replacement parts. Can anybody help. Or tell me a right way to do this job with so many aftermarket manufacturers. Thankls |

Re: 2000 Taurus Fuel Pump wrong Guage Readings
Is the car actually a flexfuel car? The flexfuel is likely to have the flexfuel logo on both front fenders and the trunklid.

Re: 2000 Taurus Fuel Pump wrong Guage Readings
Rod.
Thanks for your attention on this issue. Yes...the car has the picture of the road and a leaf emblem and says FFV next to it on the front fenders... I just realized the car is flex fuel after having for 8 years. Tank door says enthenol or unleaded gas. The only thing I can think of is that it doesn't have an extended range tank,...which the vin says it does, which may make the float read differently. I don't get it...I guess there is no computer reset on the gas guage reading? Any ideas? Thanks |

Re: 2000 Taurus Fuel Pump wrong Guage Readings
Right, the sending unit that is part of the fuel pump assembly is calibrated for the fuel tank size, there is no electronic "calibrate" feature to allow the same pump to work with both tank sizes. Sounds like you don't have the extended range tank.
