Who has their Trump GT40?

I saw on another forum that they are showing up on doorsteps.

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

I would love to see one in person before I make the purchase but I'm not sure I can wait much longer. I think I have to have this.

Do you have one on order, Ken?

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

I've got one on order from Kevin.
I also preordered a detail kit from Matthew (SMS), who has a kit and is updating the preorder group on how the kit looks, etc. He says the body proportions are excellent, the seats need work, and there is too many chromed parts.

Cool, the body is the thing I worried about the most.

Sounds like what I saw in the photos; blocky seats, a bunch of plated parts that were never chrome on the real car. Makes you really wonder who in the heck do they think they are selling to? Any serious modeler buying this kit will have the paints/equipment for finishing work, and most will strip that stupid plating straight away. But...this is Trumpeter, they've got a track record with model cars...

And wasn't there issues with removing the chrome plating from some of Trumpeters earlier car kits Bob...?
I seem to recall that being discussed back when their Nova hit the scene.... I hope it is still not the same...

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

I'm going to maintain a positive attitude toward this kit at least until I see a buildup. Remember that the engine is almost completely obscured by air box, headers etc. Whats critical, as someone else said, is the body accuracy and proportion. I would also add to that windshield glass and tires. Most of the other stuff can be scratch built or provided by the aftermarket.

I don't know Mathew Wells of Scale Motorsport but have been impressed with the overall quality of his company's products. In my opinion, he brought the 935 Detail Set to market at a price point that was prohibitive for most modelers ($500+). I hope he introduces the GT40 Detail Set at something closer to $200-250 range. While very impressive, I personally don't need machined wheel rims or engine pulleys. (Press-fit hollow rivets for the seats would be pretty cool though!....).

After building some toy-like Pocher kits with many scratch and aftermarket parts I'm convinced that with enough time and know-how one can make a stunning miniature if they start with a cool subject that has correct proportion.

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

250 bucks? Please. The inaccurate kit is 208 and you expect an aftermarket company to fix it for basically free from your price suggestion?

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

Grundski, what price would you suggest? And what kind of content would you expect the "Super Detail Kit" to contain. Are you suggesting resin parts in addition to phot-etch and turnings?

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

Just fyi, everyone, the plating on the GT40 parts isn't the same as that stuff on the Bonneville and Nova kits, so it should be easier to remove. May try bleach on a smaller part and report the results.

The kit has a coupla moments, but it seems more than workable to me...

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

Well,
I just got an email this morning from SMS - they will NOT be doing a detail kit for the GT40. On detailed examination, they feel the kit is too toy-like to spend resources trying to develop a kit that will yield the results most people would expect. So, everyone is free to super detail as they wish.

I got my kit the other day. Some parts in the engine compartment are very soft in detail. I was suprised to see oil line details. A number of large parts are held together with screws which are very visible, detracting from the model. I still think this is worth building if you are into 1/12 scale. How many other non-F1 1/12 kits have come out recently?

Re: Who has their Trump GT40?

Ah well...it's not the first kit that's had to be re-engineered by a modeler to make it look presentable.

It is a mystery though that with today's technology... and easy access to resources for research... an experienced model company can't get it right.

Over engineered there, under engineered here.
