Squeaking front end driving me nuts!!

I have a 1995 passport 4x4 and my problem is the squeaking coming from the front end.when driving. It is very annoying...both sides...When I drive it goes eee uh, eee uh, eee uh, When I park the car and jump up and down on the running board it does the same thing..My machanic said might be ball joints...it sounds more like rubber squeaking.....My friends always know when I am pulling up and so does my dog knows when I am close from a 1/2 mile away.At night when it is quieter it is really loud.Does any anyone know exactly what I need to change? upper bushings, lower bushings, shocks, ball joints,I dont want to have to buy all the parts and I also heard it is a real pain to get the axels out of the 4 wheel drive to replace lower ball joints...Thanks in advance for any help someone can give me...Norm

Re: Squeaking front end driving me nuts!!

I had the exact same squeaky noise on my 94. It was the lower ball joints that had dried up and had no grease in them.

Re: Squeaking front end driving me nuts!!

You have to separate the steering knuckle from both the upper and lower ball joints to gain enough clearance to get the axle out of the way. If you want to temporarily quiet the noise, look under there and find the teat in the dust boot and shoot it with WD- 40 or PB Blaster. It will quiet it down for a couple days and also confirm that the noise is coming from there.

Be careful when separating the uppers that you don't tear the boots. Pickle forks don't work well here.

Re: Squeaking front end driving me nuts!!

Fuzz, That was not as bad a I thought...alittle time consuming...Cracking the steering did help..I had to take the c-clip off the axel to push through the hub to get the clearance to get the old lower joint out...Put new uppers and lowers on,, not a peep or squeak!!! AWSOME!!! Good thing I did it now, I was about to hit the rotors with the worn brakes..Thank you for your advise and help...

Re: Squeaking front end driving me nuts!!

You're welcome and thanks for coming back and posting that the suggested solution worked. It will help other board users in the future by being able to search for the information they need.

It's good to see people being able to solve their own problems and fix their own cars.
