Re: 2.3 fan clutch removal direction?
I have a 2.3L 2003 Ranger,, how do you stop the water pump pully from turning while loosening up the fan clutch bolt?
I have tried a rubber strap wrench, but the pully still slips. And yes i'm going counter clock-wise.

Look at picture in link. http://www.ntxtools.com/ Search OTC-4585
Auto Zone and Advance have loaner tools. Pep Boys and O'Riley's also have some. Look closely for a direction arrow some ford's have left hand threads. If this is the case it should be marked. Check your manual. Parts stores also sell tools. |

On the pulley there are 3 holes...right? Well that is not really a water pump pulley, it appears to be a stationary pulley the clutch fan mounts to. If this is the case I inserted a screw driver in one of the holes and from under the truck I put a pipe on the end of the screw driver and locked up the pulley like this. I then used and adjustable wrench and tapped on it with a rubber mallet until it came loose. Yes is comes off counter clockwise. Once you get the fan off that pulley behund it comes off with the timing belt housing. Let me know if you need any other help. |

If it only has 3 bolts use a tool like this. KD and Lisle also make them.

The tools I previously posted the last one hooks over the bolts or studs that attach the pulley. The other tool goes on the fan you remove it before removing the water pump. You have to hold the pulley stationary and unscrew the fan blade. Borrow the tool as suggested it makes the job easier. |

Re: 2.3 fan clutch removal direction?
As the clutch fan does not bolt directly to the water pump this is NOT the tool he is needing.
The issue on the clutch fan is it screws on to a stationary pulley on the front of the timing cover not to the water pump. The water pump is driven by a belt and is not required to be removed to replace the head gasket. We could just wait until thezinger79 replies and see what he is really trying to remove. Thanks |
