|
A/C compressor
Ok so since I bought my GT a few months ago and when I first got it the A/C worked great. I tried using it the other day but just got warm air. After about 10minutes of cold air I decided to take a look at it. I did some research through the forums and google and realized my compressor wasn't kicking on.
I read that 1 of the main causes could be low refrigerant so I got a tester and only had 10psi. I got a refill kit from autozone and proceeded to charge up my A/C. When if got to about 40psi I stopped because thats what I was told was a good amount. I still watched and my compressor kicked on and worked good for about 2minutes then blam it stopped working and I saw a spark come from my compressor while it was on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTrL83NdHCg thats the video I watched and those are the instructions I followed. I guess my question is what size belt do i need to bypass the A/C while i wait to order my new compressor? When ordering is there anything else I will need besides a A/C compresor with clutch? Is this a part I should try to get from a junkyard of just go ahead and buy a new one? I'm guessing there isn't a way to test it so I should just order a new one.

If the pulley is not seized and still spins freely why bypass the system?
Anyway, go rebuilt at the minimum, a/c compressors are not junkyard items. You'll need to replace the receiver/drier and the hose with the orifice tube or the compressor warranty will be null and void. You'll also need to measure how much oil is in the old parts so the proper amount of oil can be added back into the system after it's evacuated and before it's charged. The easiest and safest way is to go somewhere that does a/c's and have the system charged, just make sure to tell them how much oil came out of the system. Otherwise you'll need to buy/rent a vacuum pump, pressure gauges and a scale to complete the job. This is assuming there are no leaks besides the compressor (the most common) or contamination in the system of course. BTW the factory manual states between 30-35 psi of refrigerant.
