Starter Teeth don't reach Flywheel teeth

So I replaced my transmission, using the original flywheel. Everything went great until I put it all back together, turned my key and no start. I took the starter back down and the teeth appear to be recessed inside the starter so there seems to be no way for them to even be touching the flywheel. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY STARTER, IT WAS FINE WHEN I TOOK IT OUT...

Re: Starter Teeth don't reach Flywheel teeth

I'll take a shot here....if you are referring to the gear being back away from the flywheel that is normal. The starter should kick the gear down to the flywheel to hit the teeth, otherwise the gear would strip off when the engine runs. It goes back inside when not being cranked. I am assuming you have not dealt with starters here and I may be way off my doing that....I have no way to know how much people know about these things. Does your starter make any noise? Describe what happens when you turn the key. Starter may be sticking, may need to add or remove a shim, possible your tranny is not exactly the same as old????

Re: Starter Teeth don't reach Flywheel teeth

Tranny is exact. I have not dealt with the inner working of a starter before. That makes sense that it will kick that gear in when not cranking. As of now, there are no shims. I'll put the starter back up and try again, Maybe it is sticking or the fuel just hasn't reached the motor yet. Thanks for the help so far.
