transmission has no reverse

99 ranger 4.0 4x4 auto trans has no reverse. I was told it made a clank sound now there is no reverse. I have no idea how this may have happened,a family member was using it and claims he didn't do anything.
Any ideas on what to expect for the repair?

Had the transmission rebuilt.The pal for the reverse broken. I was told this is a common fault. Most likely by putting the truck in reverse while still moving.Got no help from the person that was using the truck. A $1000 lesson learned ,don't lend out the trusk!
