I have a 1998 2dr 4wd Z71 Tahoe with the electronic pushbutton transfer case. While inspecting the front end of my truck due to a rolling clicking noise coming from the front end I discovered that I have a steady leak coming from the passanger side axel shaft right at the point where it bolts up to my CV axel. Can someone give me (the ultra novice DIY guy) an idea of what I'm faced with if i do indeed attempt to tackle this repair? I have limited tools so I might be borrowing some from friends. ANy idea as to what I will need in the box? Beyond removing the wheel and unbolting my CV axel I wouldn't knowwhere to begin. Any advice is most appreciated.

I suggest you create an account with www.autozone.com and look up the parts for your vehicle. While looking at the parts you can get a detailed proceedure w/pics under "repair guides" on how to do the job. From there, You may see the tools needed for the job.
Probably the biggest things that you will need to aquire is a 36mm socet and breaker bar tomremove the axle nut. A torque wrench for the same nut for re-assembly. Possibly a pickle fork to separate the ball joint if necessary. A press to separate the axle shaft from the wheel hub, It's not always needed, Many times a block of wood with a large hammer will do the job. Other than that, a basic variety of metric and standard hand tools will be sufficient.

It appears that the truck is leaking 80w90 from the point where the diffs axel shaft bolts up to the CV axel. I hope that I haven't burnt up any bearings. I'm planning on having it fixed Friday. I'm usually hands on with my truck and have done my Air Intake Manifold with my buddy before and 20k later the 350 vortech is still running strong. However, if you think that the seal replacement job is best left to the pros i will go ahead and have a mechanic do it. I have know idea on this one so i appreciate the advice. The dealer is asking $230 for the job. 2 Hrs labor $30.00 part. Ya/Na?? I'm a fan of using OEM GM parts.
