Re: 99 windstar codes now po401
yep, it's likely the dpfe. Seems funny but lots of people do the 171/174 and then the 401 code shows up. The dpfe is a really quick and easy change. Do a search and you'll get lots of hits.

Agreed, when I did my isolator bolt TSB last fall, I just went ahead and changed the DPFE at the same time just to avoid the problem. The key was if you had an original Ford DPFE, it was aluminum metal in color. This is the one you should replace. The later Ford model and after market ones (got mine at AutoZone ~ $35) are black plastic.

I still have my original DPFE (aluminum one) and have not had a code yet. Should I change mine out or should I wait for a code to pop out?

Re: 99 windstar codes now po401
I would leave it be as long as it is working.
While tracking down a slight miss......I replaced my original one with a metal Standard Motor Products unit...... Original was still good.....and the replacement is still good. Slight miss was caused by dirty fuel injectors that many fuel system cleaners would not clean (I have since found that Berryman's B-12 Chemtool seems to work on these particular deposits the form on the inside of the end cap).

Re: 99 windstar codes now po401
You could check the vaccum lines to the EGR valve.....
Otherwise, if the EGR ports are clean, the most likely suspect is the DPFE....maybe it is intermittent. I am hoping that the EGR ports were verified as clear when the isolator bolts were done.....as they were right there. EGR valve rarely fails on the Windstar.
