22re HARD 2 START?? Check here

I have owned about a million 22r & 22re p/u trucks and ive learned alot. Now ive seen alot of posts stateing that there 22re is almost imposible to start.. first of all there is a small silinoid on the R/H side of the upper intake (its easy to get too right on top) this is the cold start purge solinod. What it does is give a burst of gas into the intake while the motor is cranking. loosen the nut (be carefull because is might be under pressure) if it is then tighten it up and have a buddy turn the key to the start position while you check the wires for power. ( make sure the truck wont start) dont wanna get hurt. if you have power and fuel pressure then replace the sensor. Now back to step #1 if you did not have fuel pressure then you will need to locate the fuel pressure regulator(On the passenger side of the intake close to the firewall) remove it and blow into the port (If you can blow through it then it is bad) Replace it. If it is ok then well its fuel pump time $$$$$$$$$.

How about one that won't even "click" or turn over? I was working on the engine and yes I did not disconnect the battery and at some point I heard an audible pop when I touched something around the alternator, and now it will not start. I have full circuit through all the battery and alternator wiring and the fuses seem to all be okay. What did I do?

How about one hard to start once warmed to operating temp. Will crank over several times before finally coming to life.

Question: Is your truck fuel injected? If so, did you have the ign. on?

This is a Fuel injected. It will start sometime with normal cranking but usually it takes several rotations of the engine and I do mean several (to those of you who want to think 2-3). If it is cranking an failing to start sometime you can stop cranking then hit the key again and it might start right up and it might just go back to cranking but it eventually will start. Everytime! Thanks for your reply.

There's a few things would cause your troubles...

Here's what we have:
-Engine will crank - Starter and battery works fine
-Engine will run - Nothing mechanically wrong as far as you told me... Does it have any issues running?

The issue:
-Cranks forever- Most commonly caused by low fuel pressure. Since your truck is fuel injected, it is most likely caused by your fuel pump. Other causes take will take a little more diagnosis.

Question: Do you have the ability to check your fuel pressure? If so what year is your truck? For example, your fuel pressure for a 91 pick up w/ a 22re at idle should be 33-37 PSI.

Re: 22re HARD 2 START?? Check here

I don't have the tools but I would presume a simple pressure gauge and tubing. I would have to look up the connections for the test. The truck belongs to a friend so this post is actually for him. It's a 91 yr I think. Thanks for responding. As mentioned it starts cold just fine I'm pretty sure everytime! and sometimes hot.....but sometimes hot it does require lots of cranking. The odd thing to me is the cranking. YOu might be cranking it over and then stop. Kit the key again and it fires right up normally. but then I just might continue right where it left off cranking until it takes a notion to start.
